Jan H Lim (b. 1986, Singapore) studied architecture from 2005-2011 and took up weaving in 2013. She first learnt to weave under Saori (freestyle) weavers Kaz Madigan and Kenzo Jo, before studying traditional approaches at the Kawashima Textile School in Kyoto. Curious about materiality, colour and construction, Jan explores in her current work the relationship between structure, surface and the single strand. Her process often begins with dyeing the fibre by hand, using various kasuri (Japanese technique for ikat, or resist-dyeing) methods, before weaving, unweaving, knotting, twisting and other means of tactile play. Jan is currently based in Aachen, Germany.
